Meet the Silar Family:
My First Experiences in Haiti
Welcome to Keeping Hope Alive Haiti Project! In 2012, the Lord laid it on my heart to go to Haiti. My goal was to find an orphanage that needed assistance and I had a burning desire in my heart to minister to the children there. A friend told me about a man named Pastor Silar who had adopted 60 children in addition to his natural-born four. Once I heard his story, I knew I had to go and see for myself.
My first trip to the Silar family was in February of 2012. I got off the plane, met Pastor Silar for the first time, and then began to drive through the city of Port-au-Prince to the Silar's home. I remember seeing thousands of tents that had become "home" to so many families. As soon as I saw the tents stretching for miles, and the conditions of the roads, and the everyday life of the citizens of Haiti, my heart broke for this people. Haiti stole my heart that day.
When I finally arrived at Pastor Silar's orphanage I was greeted by 64 smiling faces and many tiny little hands reaching out to me for me to hold them. This touched my heart even more. I stayed in Pastor Silar's orphanage for two days doing nothing but holding children and playing with them. And, through the experience of living a few a few days of life with these people, I discovered what an amazing family this was.
The Silar's and their 64 children have uncommon love for one another. They wait for everyone of their 64 brothers and sisters to be served their lunch before they pray and eat. They rise early each morning to sing worship songs to the Lord. They share toys and candy often. And the two hardworking parents love every single one of them.
Since that first trip, I have taken team after team down to Haiti to have the experience of meeting this amazing family and seeing this orphanage for themselves. The Silar's are truly incredible and now it is my heart's desire to see them get fed every day and I have a vision to build them a "castle" for a home. Land has already been purchased, and I want to see this family get to enjoy a beautiful home everyday.
